KAPLA Octocolor

KAPLA Blocks are unique. One shape, one size. Each pine plank measures 4 1/2″ x 1″ x 1/4″.  Harvested from sustainable pine forests in the south of France. Laser-cut in Morocco. Such precise cutting means planks adjoin perfectly for balance and even weight distribution. Figuring out how to use identical planks to build well balanced structures that don’t fall down intrigues children and adults alike. That makes these KAPLA Octocolor plank blocks an appealing choice for intergenerational play.

Patterns and Sequences

In addition to building structures, children can now use wooden plank blocks to create patterns and sequences. While arranging and rearranging planks of different colors into patterns, they are preparing themselves for learning to read.  That’s because a word is a sequence of letters. Not only that but a sequence of words forms a sentence.

Pops and Patterns

Color planks also add pops of color to structures.  As children incorporate color into their play, they experiment. They decide not only that they want to add color to their structure but which color  or combination of colors should go where. In fact, they may create vertical patterns of color as they build higher and higher. Using color as a design element requires making and following a plan as well as balance, controlled movements, dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.

 Block Play Builds Skills

Block play involves all areas of human development. Develops gross and fine motor skills. Balance and coordination, grasp and release, dexterity, eye-hand coordination. As well as creativity and logical thinking. Organizing, planning, and problem solving.  As structures take form, children gain awareness of spatial relationships. Because obstacles arise, successful projects also require focus, patience, and perseverance. Learning to deal with setbacks is a must.

Along the way children learn mathematics and science. Specifically an awareness  of shape, dimensionality, and volume. As well as an experiential understanding of balance, stability, and the unyielding force of gravity. With experience they learn to calculate the number of planks they need to build the structure they envision.

Block play can be solitary or in a group. Working with others develops valuable social skills. Listening carefully and communicating clearly. Compromise and cooperation. The key to success with the KAPLA Octocolor 100 piece set is building a solid base. Doing so requires and refines all these skills.
